Are
you planning your next vacations? Come to Kefalonia! But why
should you spend your vacations in Kefalonia? Let us tell you
some facts about the most beautiful Ionian island.
Kefalonia
is the largest island of the Ionian Sea, and the 6th in size of
all Greek islands. It is located opposite the Patra's Gulf at
the west coast of mainland Greece. It covers an area of 690
square kilometers and is composed of four spacious peninsulas by
the names of Assos, Livathos, Paliki and Erissos. The landscape
is mountainous and the peak of the famous mountain Ainos is the
highest in all Ionian islands, with an altitude of 1,628 meters.
In
your vacations here in Kefalonia you will meet some of the
approximately 32,000 permanent inhabitants (most of them reside
in it’s capital, Argostoli). It should be mentioned that,
before the 1953 great earthquake (8,1 points of the Richter
scale for about 30 seconds!), Kefalonia had 365 villages, but
today only 200 have remained, most near the coasts and the few
plains. The name of the inhabitants of Kefalonia (Cephaloi)
comes from the word “cephales” (meaning heads), which may
refer to Kefalonia’s mountains or to the fact that the island
has the tallest mountain of all Ionian Islands.
In
almost every village of the island you can find orthodox
churches and monasteries, as the religious element here is very
intense. Besides that though, Kefalonia is an island full of
mystery and beauty, so your vacations won't be boring at all.
Many unexplained phenomena occur here, such as the moving rock
"Kounopetra" in Lixouri, a set of two rocks in the sea
that make a slight scissors movement. Nowadays the phenomenon
has disappeared, most probably because the unstoppable movement
of the underwater masses has stabilized the base of the rocks,
but there are still people that remember the rocks moving (the
writer's grandfather had seen it with his own eyes). Then, it’s
the phenomenon of the water’s route under the island, which is
described in the Photo Album
of our site, as well as the phenomenon of the appearance of
little snakes at the church of Panagia in Markopoulo (which is
also mentioned at the Photo Album).
Your
vacations in Kefalonia will cause you one serious
problem: that of choosing a beach to swim. There are more than a
hundred places someone could go for swimming, snorkeling or
fishing and all of them are so magnificent that it makes it
really hard to choose.
The
activities here vary from boat tours and fishing, excursions to
Ainos mountain and it's close by villages, visits to vineyards,
very old monasteries and churches, night life, wonderful local
kitchen and all these in an island of wild nature which has a
unique way to combine both mountain and sea, both "extreme
action" and tranquil vacations, all year round.
It
is really impossible to describe all the wonderful viewpoints of
this island, and even if we try hard it is certain that some of
them will be over passed. Our site contains photos of Kefalonia
for the most known places but these are just a sample of what
one can visit when coming to the island and a means of
stimulating the visitor to explore the place and find what fits
best for him.
